About Us

The Travellers Rest

Welcome to The Travellers Rest Pub, Restaurant and Caravan Club authorised Campsite
The Travellers has been in Newtown as a building since the 14th Century, surrounded by Farms, Fields and Countryside Serving carefully selected and nurtured Real Ales, wines and fine foods. Paul and Amanda  your friendly Landlord and Landlady and Head Chef Eddie(who won an AA Rosette when he was Head Chef at the Queens Hotel in Portsmouth) welcome you to, what we feel is,  the perfect country pub. Just minutes from Portsmouth and Fareham to get away from it all for a lovely meal and good company..Perfect for back packers, trekkers, walkers and cyclists...and even camping too with a large serviced site, stables next door and on the door step of The Bere Forest, 100 Arces Woods and The Southdowns National Park. The campsite is an official Caravan and Camping Club Site set in the grounds of  The Travellers Rest in Newtown with great facilities including childrens play area, electric hook ups, shower blocks and free wifi. Close (20 minutes away) to the Ferries at Portsmouth Harbour, we are also the ideal stop over for caravaners. We will shortly be opening a shop in the grounds supplying basic provisions, fresh on site cooked bread and farm produce. We are also looking in to the possibility of incorporating a Post Office in to the shop too.

A statement of fact re the future of the Travellers Rest

You will shortly notice a " For Sale" board going on the Travellers, please don't worry :-)

Please be reassured that this is procedural following our offer for the Freehold to the current owners of the Freehold being Enterprise Inns plc.

Enterprise have decided to entertain our bid. In order to progress it, being a plc and therefore accountable to their shareholders, they simply cannot accept our offer without subjecting to market forces and therefore marketing the property through Fleurets to comply with their obligations.

To ensure the long term viability of the Travellers we need to become the owners and therefore free of tie as I am sure you can appreciate as the winter months are very tough financially to get through.

As owners of the Freehold we would consequently become free of tie and be able to purchase our stock at at least 40% below what we are currently paying and also would not have a high rent to pay. Another compelling reason why we feel buying the Freehold is a very prudent is the great news that forward camping bookings for the summer are heaps up.

Enterprise have unambiguously stated that they are more than happy for us to continue as Tenants but that doesn't work financially for us and is almost certainly the reason why the last two tenants were unable to sustain their Tenancy. Whence the need for the purchase of the Freehold

There will now be a 6 month period of notice where we,  to be honest, will be vulnerable to hostile offers from developers and other interested parties.  However,  our offer was actually advised by the same agents that are going to be marketing and is a cash offer so this makes it a very strong offer indeed.

We would therefore please please ask for your support during this process and please help us get the facts out there as opposed to made up gossip as there is a genuinely real danger of the Travellers no longer being a pub if our bid is not successful We really need your help please :-)

Once we have successfully purchased the Freehold we will finally be opening the village shop which is already totally equipped.

If you have any questions now or during the next 6 months please contact us at the pub directly. We will be posting regular updates on our site and Facebook.

Thank you for taking the time to read this

Huge thanks Paul,  Eddie,  Becks and Matt
